Those three items right there are my favorites for cake and cupcake decorating. I was super lucky, being a twin, because my mom would both of my favorites! German chocolate cake for my sister, and carrot cake for me! What better than a little sliver of each for your birthday? The name German chocolate cake is a little deceiving as it is not actually a German dessert and traditionally the cake is a lighter colored cake with a mild chocolate taste and the entire cake is usually covered in coconut pecan frosting. My families version is a chocolate cake with chocolate frosting covering the cake and coconut frosting on top and in the center of the cake. This cake seriously can’t be beat, especially if you’re a chocolate ! I the cake in 8” or 9” rounds, bake it and let it cool completely. Then I wrap it really well in plastic wrap and stick each layer in a ziplock zer bag. Ze for up to one month. Frozen cakes are very easy to frost! Both frostings (coconut and chocolate) can be made ahead and placed in a covered container in the fridge. Remove them from the fridge about an hour or so before you’re ready to frost your cake. This will allow them to come to room temperature and they will be easier to frost. Bake for 25 - 35 minutes (depending on your cake pan size. The 9'pan takes less time to bake) or until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean or with few crumbs. Cool 5 minutes in the pan and then invert onto wire racks to cool completely. Smooth a thin layer of chocolate frosting over the cake layer, and then spoon half of the coconut frosting on top, spreading it into a smooth layer. Leave about 1/2 inch between the filling and edge of cake. .

I guarantee you will get rave reviews for this cake. You don’t have to tell anyone easy it is to . Let them think you slaved all day making the most perfect chocolate cake for them! ( Because you love them so much). In the video, I a mixer to blend the ingrents but honestly, the batter comes together perfectly fine with a hand whisk. You don’t even have to worry about over-mixing the batter like most cakes. Seriously, you just can’t mess up this cake. This recipe was adapted from the back of the Hershey’s cocoa box. I have increased the amount of the cocoa to balance out what was otherwise an overly sweet cake. In addition, I switched the hot water for coffee to compliment and enhance the chocolate. The hot liquid is added directly to the cocoa powder to ensure the cocoa solids melt. You can use any brand of unsweetened cocoa powder as long as it is not Dutch processed. This cake uses baking soda as a leavening agent which needs an acidic ingrent to achieve proper rise and to balance out the flavors. I made four layers out of this cake by cutting each of the layers in half horizontally. This is an easy task to do with the use of a cake leveler but if you don’t have a leveler and don’t feel comfortable slicing the layers by hand, then I have provided instructions to bake the cake in 4 different pans. Just see the notes at the bottom of the recipe card. I made this cake with a super creamy, decadent cream cheese frosting. It’s a great combination that everyone loves. If you want a double dose of chocolate, our double chocolate cream cheese frosting is out of this world! . Pour the batter into the two prepared pans and place in the center of the preheated oven. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes for the 9 inch pans or 33 to 37 minutes for the 8 inch pans (a toothpick inserted in the center of the cakes should come out clean).
